Setting a table is not decoration, it is about sharing space. Every piece has a place, and that place is determined by the order in which it is used.

The basic layout
- Placemat: at the bottom, directly in front of the chair. It sits about 1-2 cm in from the table edge.
- Plate: in the middle of the placemat.
- Fork: to the left of the plate. If there is more than one fork, use them from the outside in; the outermost belongs to the first course.
- Knife: to the right of the plate, blade facing the plate. The spoon goes to the right of the knife.
- Glass: a little above the tip of the knife, i.e. at the top right corner of the plate. The coaster goes under the glass.
- Napkin: either on the plate or to the left of the fork.
Where does the table runner go?
The runner belongs to the table, not to a person: it is laid down the middle of the table, parallel to the long side. The jug, bread basket, salt cellar and candle holder are gathered on this strip. The edge of the runner should not touch the inner edges of the placemats; leaving a few centimetres between them makes the table look neater.
On a round table the runner is not laid lengthwise; either two runners are crossed or none is used, and a single serving piece is placed in the middle.
Everyday table vs. dinner party
For everyday use, placemats + coasters are enough; one plate, one fork, one knife. For a dinner party, add a runner, more plates and more cutlery according to the courses. As the number of pieces grows, the pattern should stay the same — a second pattern on a crowded table makes it look scattered.
Three common mistakes
- Using a tablecloth and placemats together. Both do the same job; choose one. A runner, however, can be laid over a tablecloth.
- Leaving too little space per person. Allow about 60 cm of table width per place setting. Any narrower and neighbouring plates overlap.
- Collecting pieces from different patterns. Pieces from the same collection match each other; with pieces bought separately you have to work to make them match.
For a table in one pattern
Table setting sets come for 4, 6 or 8 people; the runner, placemats, coasters and cushion covers come out of the box in the same pattern. The set for 4 has 11 pieces, for 6 has 15 and for 8 has 19.
Breakfast table vs. dinner table
At breakfast the middle of the table is crowded: plates of cheese, olives and jam cover the shared area. So at breakfast the runner works not as a single line but as a base under the dishes in the middle. The space per person shrinks, so placemats are kept small or not used at all.
At dinner, personal space is kept: each person has an area for plate, cutlery and glass, and shared serving dishes are gathered on the runner. The same table and the same pieces create two different layouts.
Dinner party table: what changes?
- More pieces. Several forks and knives are laid from the outside in, in the order of the courses.
- A charger plate is added. The order is placemat → charger plate → dinner plate; the placemat stays on the table throughout the meal.
- The centre line is fixed. Candle holders, jug and flowers are gathered on one axis on the runner, chosen low enough not to block eye level.
- The pattern stays the same. A second pattern on a crowded table makes it look scattered.
Tablecloth or placemats?
Both do the same job: protecting the table and creating a base. Used together, one becomes redundant. Choose like this:
- Placemats if the table is beautiful: if you want the surface of a wooden or marble table to show, skip the cloth and put a placemat at each place.
- A tablecloth if the table should be hidden: on tables with a worn surface or a colour that does not fit, a cloth is better. A runner can be laid over the cloth.
The order for setting a table
- Wipe the table and let it dry.
- If using a tablecloth, lay it and smooth out the creases.
- Place the runner in the middle of the table, parallel to the long side.
- Place the placemats in front of the chairs, 1-2 cm in from the table edge.
- Plates go in the middle of the placemats.
- Fork on the left, knife and spoon on the right; if there are several, from the outside in.
- Glass and coaster at the top right corner of the plate.
- Napkin on the plate or to the left of the fork.
- Shared serving dishes last, along the runner.
What to do on a small table?
On a narrow table, trying to use every piece backfires. The order of priority is: placemats first (they define each person's space), then coasters, and the runner last. On tables of 120 cm and under, a single serving piece in the middle looks airier than a runner. On a round table, two runners can be crossed or none used at all.
The ease of a table in one pattern
When pieces are bought separately, matching colour and pattern takes time; choosing within one collection solves this from the start. At LaMua Home every pattern collection is made as a table runner, placemat, coaster and cushion cover; in the table setting sets all four come together — the set for 4 has 11 pieces, for 6 has 15 and for 8 has 19.
