How long should a table runner be? Runner size by table length

There are two measurements when choosing a runner: length and width. Both depend on the table, not on the pattern.

Length: shorter or longer than the table?

There are two common ways, and both are correct:

  • Shorter than the table (stays on top): the runner ends short of both ends of the table. Practical for everyday use, it does not catch on chairs.
  • Hanging over the ends: the runner hangs 15-30 cm over each end of the table. It looks more formal for a dinner party, but should not reach the knees of the person sitting there.

The only wrong case is a runner exactly the length of the table: the ends line up with the table edge and it looks untidy.

A practical chart by table length

40x140 cm runner:

  • 160 cm table: 10 cm left at each end — the stays-on-top style.
  • 180 cm table: 20 cm at each end, a comfortable layout.
  • 120-140 cm table: the runner covers the table completely or hangs over; on a table this size, a single serving piece looks better than a runner.
  • 200 cm and over: a single runner can get lost in the middle; two runners can be laid across the table.

At LaMua Home, runners are made in two sizes: 40x140 cm and 45x138 cm. The size is written in the product name.

Table runner sizes by number of people

Table length can be estimated from the number of people. A runner that stays on the table is 20-40 cm shorter than the table; a runner that drops over the ends is 30-60 cm longer:

For 8200-220 cm160-200 cm230-280 cm

LaMua Home's 40x140 and 45x138 cm runners suit a table for 6 as a runner that stays on the table, and a table for 8 as a single centre runner. On a table for 12, lay two runners end to end or across the table.

Width: a third of the table's width

A runner's width should not exceed about a third of the table's width. On a 90 cm wide table, 30-40 cm is balanced. On a narrow table a wide runner turns into a tablecloth; on a wide table a narrow runner gets lost in the middle.

Using it with placemats

The runner goes in the middle, the placemats on either side, with a few centimetres between them. If the table is less than 80 cm deep, the runner and placemats start to overlap; in that case either choose a narrower runner or lay the runner across the middle of the table.

Washing

The runner is 100% polyester and machine washes on a 30 °C delicate cycle. Do not tumble dry; dry in the shade; if needed, iron at no more than 110 °C on the reverse. (Laminated placemats do not go in the machine — that piece needs different care.)

What fabric is a table runner made of?

In a runner, the fabric determines ease of care more than looks. Common options:

  • Polyester: crease-resistant, colourfast, machine washable. The most practical option for everyday use.
  • Linen and linen-look weaves: give a natural texture but crease and need ironing.
  • Laminated (coated) fabric: a thin film is applied to the surface; liquid is not absorbed, stays on the surface as droplets and wipes off with a damp cloth. Preferred in homes with children and on tables in frequent use.

LaMua Home runners are 100% polyester; some are laser cut with a laminated surface. Laminated ones wipe clean, plain woven ones are machine washable — the care line on the product page tells you which.

Which programme should a runner be washed on?

A polyester runner is washed on a 30 °C delicate cycle with similar colours. The rules are short:

  • Do not use whiteners or bleach — the pattern dulls.
  • No boiling or high temperatures; the surface treatment breaks down.
  • Do not tumble dry; hang to dry in the shade.
  • If ironing is needed, iron at no more than 110 °C on the reverse; polyester goes shiny at high heat.
  • A laminated surface does not go in the machine. Wipe with a damp cloth; for a stubborn stain, a drop of washing-up liquid is enough.

Storing it folded leaves crease marks over time; rolling it prevents them.

Which runner for a white table?

Two useful rules for choosing colour:

  • One plain, one patterned. If the table or tablecloth is plain, the runner can be patterned; if the cloth is already patterned, choose a plain runner. When both are patterned, the table looks cluttered.
  • Contrast or repetition. On a white table, a black, navy or dark-toned runner creates a clear contrast. For a softer look, choose pastel tones. Another way is to repeat a dominant colour on the table in the runner.

A patterned runner sits easily on a wooden table, because the wood's own grain acts as a neutral. On a glass table the underside of the runner is visible, so clean edges matter — on laser-cut models the edge is sealed, so no fraying appears.

Is a runner enough on its own?

Yes. For those who do not want a tablecloth but do not want to leave the table bare either, a runner works well on its own: it sets a line in the middle, the edges stay open and the table's own material shows. Add a placemat for each person to this layout and the table is complete.

Using runners across the table

If a single runner gets lost in the middle of a long table, runners can be used across it: laid perpendicular to the table so that one sits in front of each person. This layout works especially on tables of 200 cm and over, but it needs as many runners as people, so it costs more.
