A placemat is the piece laid under the plate that protects the table from drips, heat and scratches. LaMua placemats have a laminated surface: they do not absorb liquid, wipe clean with a damp cloth and never need washing. The edges are laser cut, so they stay firm, do not curl and do not fray.

Wipe-clean placemats

LaMua placemats are wipe-clean: the laminated surface does not absorb liquid, and a damp cloth after the meal is all they need. If you are looking for a placemat set, there are sets of 2 placemats + coasters and table sets with a runner.

Single placemats and 2 placemats + 2 coasters sets are available. Four placemats are recommended for a table for four, six for a table with guests. Every pattern collection includes a matching table runner, coaster and cushion cover.

Placemat or "amerikan servis"?

Both names describe the same product: "amerikan servis" is the established term in Türkiye, "supla" comes from French. What sets them apart from fabric placemats is that the laminated surface does not stain and can be wiped and put away after every use. For details, see our article on the difference between placemats, runners and coasters.

Size and layout

Standard sizes and layout suggestions by table size are in our article on placemat sizes. If you use a runner and placemats together, the placemats go on either side of the runner; our table setting sets give you this layout ready-made. Within Türkiye, shipping is free on orders from 1,000 TL; below that, placemat orders ship for 85 TL.

A placemat is the mat laid under the plate; it protects the table from heat and stains and brings order to the table. The LaMua Home collection has 62 placemat models in 31 pattern series. All models are made with the laser-cut technique; you can build a set with the runner and coasters of the same pattern.

What Is a Placemat?

A placemat is a single table mat placed under the plate at each place setting. Unlike a tablecloth it does not cover the whole table; it defines a separate area for each person. This protects the table surface from hot plates and dripping water and makes the table setting clearer. It is used on its own for everyday meals and together with a runner for special occasions.

What Is the Difference Between a Placemat and a Charger Mat?

In everyday use, the two words are often used for the same product. When a distinction is made, a charger mat (supla) is the larger, stiffer decorative mat placed under the plate, while a placemat is the thin mat with a fabric, laminated or PVC surface. LaMua Home models belong to the second group thanks to their laminated fabric and laser-cut structure: thin, light and wipeable.

What Does Laser-Cut Placemat Mean?

Laser cutting means the pattern is created not by printing on the fabric but by cutting the edges and openings with a laser. Because the cut edge is sealed by heat, the fabric edges do not unravel or fray; with no seam allowance, the mat stays thin and the plate sits as if directly on the table. Lace-like openwork patterns only come out crisp with this technique.

What Materials Are Placemats Made Of?

On the market there are straw, bamboo, jute, felt, faux leather, PVC and fabric options. LaMua Home placemats are made of 100% polyester laminated fabric. Because the laminated surface does not absorb liquid, tea, coffee and grease stains do not soak into the fabric; they come off with a damp cloth.

How Do You Clean a Placemat?

Care for laminated laser-cut mats is as follows:

  • Wipe with a damp cloth; for stubborn stains use mildly soapy water.
  • Do not machine wash or leave soaking in water.
  • Do not iron; heat damages the laminated surface.
  • Do not use bleach, abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
  • Store flat and dry; stack them flat instead of folding.

What to Look For When Choosing a Placemat

First think about the number of seats at your table and the diameter of your plates: a few centimetres of space should remain around the edge of the plate on every side. Then decide how often you will use it — for daily use a wipeable surface suits, for special occasions only, textured and decorative models do. Finally, look at pattern unity: a table completed with the runner and coasters of the same series looks tidier than pieces chosen one by one.
